Not yet ready for Autumn

Quirky tavena in Vathy Samos.
Ive been reading Home Sweet Anywhere written by Lynne Martin and following her blog at homefreeadventures.com. Lynne and her husband Tim sold their house and possessions  about five years ago to embark on travelling the world. Lynne I think is now in her early 70's and Tim a few years younger. I love this couple, Im totally enthralled by their lifestyle and I want to do it too. Lovejoy is up for it I think?? However,we will not sell our home, but will probably rent it out for a couple of years this along with our pensions should give us enough income to fund our traveling and living expenses.

I have a serious case of wanderlust I really do and although I adore my family and my home I need to get this out of my system before I'm too much older and may not have the energy or inclination to live out of a carry on bag. I also realise how fortunate I am to have been able to retire early with no mortgage or debts so I want to have adventures before I settle down to growing my own veg lol.

Me and Lovejoy a bit worse for wear
Library of Celsus in Ephesus Turkey
numerous trips so far this year include Mexico, six weeks based on Samos visiting Turkey, Ikaria and Patmos, Gran Canaria a couple of weeks ago with our daughters and granddaughters and various trips into London for theatre shows and somerset house open air film night. We are taking one further trip to Samos on Wednesday for a month to prolong our summer I am not yet ready to launch myself into Autumn. When we get home there will be a new granddaughter's imminent arrival and further trips to plan for. Life is so much fun and I am having a ball in retirement I only wish I had more time to blog but I'm too busy living my life to write about it at the moment. Not that I'm saying those that blog every day aren't living their life theyr'e just much more organised than me lol.

Does anyone else have a massive wanderlust? If so how do you manage/fund it etc? Also what impact does it have on friends and family?

  2. I don't have wanderlust in the slightest but I do understand those that do and I love hearing about their adventures. We've had lots of lovely holidays abroad over the years but settled down to holidaying in the UK more recently and haven't been abroad now since 2008.

    1. I think because I've been fortunate enough to finish working much earlier than I had anticipated I want it to mean something and have adventures. I don't want these years to slide by end up at 65 and wish I'd carried on working. I've always had wanderlust tho and even exploring UK is fab there's always something new to discover on your own front door step isn't there?

  3. I have massive wanderlust and would easily sell up and roam the world. Hubby not so much. He likes planned trips of a week or two and really enjoys the travel but doesn't have any urge to live somewhere else. Plus, at least for the next 5-10 years we have a business so we really can't get away like I would like to (4-6 weeks). Maybe later in life :) In the mean time I also read blogs like yours.

    1. I think if I just wanted to stay home Lovejoy would be ok with that but he's an amenable soul and loves me so puts up with me dragging him all over the place lol

    1. I do miss home but the more trips I take the more I want and actually everyone is fine when we're not there, they miss us but get on with there own lives and love it when we come back. I have loads of stuff happen and think often ooh that would be a good post but then weeks go by and I've not written anything lol I think we all have different organisational skills without realising it. I wish I could post everyday but it's never gonna happen.

  5. I am so happy you found my blog so I could find yours!!! I am also an early retiree; however a year ago, I found a low stress, 3 day a week job that I love so now have a great balance. I don't have the wanderlust you have - but I MUST go to the beach once a year and usually one more trip such as the mountains or the desert. My free time is spent playing with my daughter and granddaughter.

    1. Hi nice to meet you I spend a great deal of time when home playing/ looking after my grandkids they are so fab and funny I adore them however I could still be working so I want this unexpected free time I have to travel as much as possible. What kind of low stress job do you do?

    2. I am a development assistant at a nonprofit healthcare center. It is 3 days a week and I don't have a lot of responsibility. For me, stress is constant deadlines and a lot of responsibility - I had that in my working life as a benefits manager. The job I have now is routine and busy but I can easily leave it at the end of the day. Like you, I am debt free and I own my home so IF this job changed or became stressful I could move on. That freedom means the world to me. I think it is awesome that you can enjoy the travelling and satisfying your wanderlust!

  6. I am of similar age to you and would love to do what you are doing but my husband would definitely not! He is adamant at the moment that he will work until state pension age. Money is the main reason but also he has few hobbies so his work has always been his life. I would prefer if he would perhaps work fewer hours and we could have mini adventures while we are "young" enough to enjoy them. Until that time I enjoy following yours.

  7. I have been very fortunate in being able to retire early my husband took a retirement redundancy and although he could have carried on working he decided not to. I decided to finish at 56 to spend time with him as he is a few years older than me now I intend to drag him all over the place lol

  8. How fabulous that you are making plans - we are too! similar age to you, we hope to back pack a bit, use youth hostels, as soon as our youngest is out of college we would like to spread our wings. We are visiting Mexico later this year (staying near Cancun in a big 3 hotel complex) and it will be a fabulous break/complete relaxation. Am looking forward to seeing some jungle/caves on excursions and some snorkelling. Did you get to do any of this?

  9. Oh I have always had wanderlust. I first moved to Switzerland when I was 21 and after my rent was paid I virtually lived on soup and bread so that every other penny (franc) went on travel. Marriage and two kids slowed it down but didn't stop it and since my ex buggered off and both kids moved out I am footloose and fancy free again, although still working. As soon as my mortgage is paid off I will retire (I will be paying off a 17 year mortgage in 8 if all goes well). When I no longer have the energy for the long haul I will spend more time exploring the UK and France. I just realized I have been a member of the YHA for over 40 years - must get back into that. And as far as I am concerned you are absolutely right to do what you are doing - that way there will be no regrets. Cheers. Anna

  10. You seem to have so much energy, Wendy, so enjoy every moment of your travels. We are both retired now (both 66) but haven't been abroad for over 15 years. The only place I would like to go to is Australia to see our son and his family but OH won't go and I don't fancy going it alone, so in the UK we stay. Please keep posting your photos, I love to see them :)

  11. I belong to an Asian country and quite conservative background yet dreams do not care for boundaries and objections.
I am forty five and can feel that don't have much time .
Since I get my consciousness I want to see this whole wonderful planet. Want to get in mountains and jump into oceans.
My society and lifestyle doesn't allow me but my strong faith is creating craks in walls of rules and though not be enough lucky like you but surely will visit Europe and England soon.
Best of luck for your intentions dear.stay safe and happy

  12. I love to travel but just can't afford the money or time at the moment... We've been to Ireland twice and I long for a third or more time.
I hope you're had a great trip! Thank you for visiting my blog.

  13. Both my husband and I retired early and now pursue lots of lovely hobbies, crafting and woodwork are usually top of the list. We also like to travel although this year my husbands and parents ill health have slowed us down a little.
